Integrative child psychotherapy is now available at the centre You may have noticed that some archetypal models and a toy box have now appeared at the centre. Shaun Goodwin, who has been practising at The Natural Health Centre for some time as an adult therapist and counsellor is now also offering therapy for children and young people. An integrative transpersonal therapist believes that, in addition to the normal environmental and social factors known to affect development, a child has soul qualities, with which they are born and that are unique to them. With very young children a psychotherapist does not usually discuss problems. Problems are explored in the context of play. This is a powerful form of communication, which tells the trained eye a lot about how a child is experiencing the world and the difficulties the child is experiencing. Play is also a form of healing and children are able to ‘move on’ when they ‘play out’ their fears or anger. All therapy sessions take place in a ‘playroom’. A child will often describe therapy as ‘fun’, but far more than play is taking place. Child Therapy can help with bereavement, divorce, attachment difficulties, problems at school, bullying, eating problems, experiences of abuse, anger, substance misuse and self harming, feeling low and much more. Shaun also has experience of working with children on the autistic spectrum, helping them to come to terms with seeing the world differently to others. Before any counselling or therapeutic work begins with a child, a meeting with the parents takes place to determine the issues and what is required.
